Purpose of the Percy Hough Virtual Gallery
Welcome to the Percy Hough Virtual Gallery. We have developed this site to document and share images of the paintings of Morris County, New Jersey artist Percy Hough and to gather more information about Hough and his art. By sharing these images, we hope to learn of further paintings by this artist of the later Hudson River School and Arthur Quartley seascape traditions.
Hough was principally a landscape painter. His paintings, both artistically and historically, capture Morris County, New Jersey’s hills, farms, and rivers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although photographers took many photographs of the Morris Canal, there are few paintings, making Hough’s Canal paintings of particular interest and importance. He also painted early houses in Morris County that are now historic sites while other historic sites no longer exist.
This Gallery has been a collaborative effort by individuals who own and treasure Percy Hough’s paintings. As Curators, we thank all those who contributed both images and information on the families for whom Hough painted many of his works.
If you own or know of any Percy Hough paintings or commercial work or have information about Hough’s life, we encourage you to get in touch. We look forward to incorporating into this gallery any images you wish to share of Hough’s work or information about him. No owner’s names or addresses are included in the Gallery and none of the paintings shown is for sale.
