Rockaway River and Landscapes Collection

View from Foxs Brook, Rockaway

Date: 1899

Dimensions: 30" x 18"

Media:  Oil on canvas

Location: Private collection

Notes:

Hough’s romanticized and naturalized view of Rockaway shows the Methodist Church steeple on the left and the Presbyterian Church tower on the right. This view toward Church St. appears to have been painted at approximately the point where the Rockaway River meets Foxs Brook in today’s Donatoni Park. From this vantage point the town of Rockaway and its industrial plants are obscured behind the trees and only the steeple and tower are seen and reflected in the river.

Hough painted this landscape in 1899, well before the Methodist Church steeple was destroyed by lightning in 1914.
