Notes
This painting is one of two paintings Hough entered in the First Annual Exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, which opened at the Grand Central Palace in New York City in April 1917, the largest exhibition of artists’ work to that date. This image is from the catalogue of the exhibition. The second of Hough’s two entries was entitled “Landscape.” Neither painting is known to exist today.
Arthur Quartley (1839-1886) was a 19th c. painter who specialized in seascapes and landscapes in his early career. Quartley established his workshop in NYC in 1875, specializing in marine painting. Hough established his painting business in NYC in the 1880s. We do not know the connection between Quartley and Hough. Hough may have been an apprentice or student at Quartley’s workshop. Hough’s painting Ships at Sea, 1908, is highly suggestive of Quartley’s work.
