Notes

Pompton Lakes was an outer-suburb of NYC founded like Rockaway on iron ore and foundries. Like Rockaway, it remained essentially rural through the early 20th century. Pompton Lake was linked via a feeder to the Morris Canal. The connection of Hough with this area of NJ is not known. However, with three rivers running through the Pompton Plains landscape, it was an attractive area for artists to paint.
