Incline Plane 6 East, Rockaway

Date: 1911

Dimensions: 16" x 22"

Media: Oil on canvas

Location: Private Collection

Notes:

Plane 6 East in Rockaway was the first inclined plane built on the Morris Canal. This view shows the incline after its enlargement in the 1850s. The incline was close to the Halsey Ave. house where Hough and his wife Sue lived with Sue’s parents Alexander and Francis Mott. The incline site is now part of the parking lot of St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church on Church St.

In the distance can be seen the steeple of the old Rockaway Methodist Church on Church St. The steeple was hit by lightning and destroyed by fire in 1914.
